How to prepare 8x10 headshots for "printable photos"

See below: How to scan album photos

Scan the headshot at 200 dpi.

If you're using photoshop, you can use this recipe, otherwise just save the photo and send to me. Unless you know your program well and can adapt the recipe, that is.

Make a new image/window. Size it at:
width 4 inches
height 6 inches
Resolution: 300 dots per inch

When the newly scanned image is the active window, press control-a, and then control-c.

Make the new image window active and press control-v.

Then use the pointer tool (top right on the menu) and position the photo so the face is pleasingly positioned in the frame.

Then save the photo (save copy) as jpg with resolution set at 3. The resulting file size should be around 100-180 Kb.

Some more considerations:

This frame is smaller than the scanned image, and for some headshots you need to resize the photo first. That's fairly unusual, and I've had to do it a few times so far. Since headshots are broader than album photos, it makes sense to do it this way. If you shrink the photo too much, you'll get white or black borders top and bottom on the finished image. Usually there are borders on a headshot anyway, and it makes sense to get rid of that when the finished print will be smaller. Now and then I've ended up scanning at 300 dpi, if the face is very small in the frame and there are broad borders.

Some headshots are printed in such a way that it creates a moire effect. Try and get hold of an original photo for scanning if the photo is printed in such a way you can see that it isn't photo quality. You can get rid of the moire effect, but I'm not going to teach you how right now.

How to scan album photos

It's fairly easy. Just scan them at 300 dpi (dots per inch). Then save. If you need to crop the photo, you should scan at higher dpi. Make sure the finished image can be printed out at 4x6 or 6x4. How about combining more than one photo with cool effects if there's no other way to have a finished image the right size?
